3299 De Rotterdam
De Rotterdam, a new high-rise building in the centre of Rotterdam, was designed by OMA as a vertical city in which the elevator serves as a passageway to other parts of the building and a place to meet in transit.
Studio Makkink & Bey furnished and designed these ‘transit spaces’ located surrounding the elevator. The design aim was reinstating the infrastructure of movement to prompt interaction between people and all offices present and facilitate meeting spaces so that they upgrade the time spent waiting to a more useful pause.
For example, the caretakers’ offices in the middle of each floor are neat see-through boxes with metal tool walls. Thus, the handyman is easy to speak to, and his unit easy to organize.
Positioned in curtained areas and hallways, furniture such as the ‘WorkSofa’, ‘SideSeat’ and ‘BeTween’ from PROOFF as well as the newly designed swiveling ‘De Rotterdam Chair’ offer seating, allowing for informal meetings and discussions to take place.
